The purpose of rib vaulting and buttresses was to distribute the great weight of the cathedral outwards creating greater stability and strength, particularly for the roof. The increased stability created by these to architectural designs allowed for greater and greater overall height in the building. The Perpendicular style in England is an excellent example.
Ribbed vaulting is a type of groin vault. The skeleton of the vault is formed by diagonal ribs. Over the rips is a light masonry skin the webbing. The ribs and the arches channel weight out and down to the ground. The area enclosed by the vault is called the bay.
