For The Continuing Presence of the Past, the Harrisons’ Vision for the Green Heart of Holland: In their work, the Harrisons have come to believe that their major task is to create situations that result in what they call “an eco-cultural stability.” How does the design of the installation in Gouda reflect that larger purpose?

In this work the Harrisons have created not only an art installation, but they produced a plan through which south Holland could maintain its “green heart” of pastures and farm land. This plan, which is associated with “Good Government,” was initially adopted by the Dutch government. The Final Report for Sustainable Open Space in North West Europe funded by the European Regional Development Fund declared the Green Heart of Holland one of the seven most valuable open spaces in the region and in need of continued protection.
