For the most part, pregnant women can obtain their required nutrients though foods, but there are some cases when supplementation is recommended. Discuss the two most common nutrients that may require supplementation during pregnancy

Folic acid and iron: Neural tube deficits are the most common type of birth defect and can be prevented with adequate folic acid intake. Neural tube defects occur during the first 3—4 weeks after conception, before a woman may know that she is pregnant. Therefore, it is recommended that all women of childbearing age, and especially those trying to get pregnant consume adequate amounts of folic acid. This can be accomplished by taking a prenatal multivitamin that includes folic acid, or a 400 microgram independent supplement. It is important to note that once pregnant, a women's folic acid needs increase to 600 micrograms. Pregnant women need about 1.5 times the amount of iron as non-pregnant women. Prenatal multivitamins typically include iron, but additional iron supplementation may be warranted based on intake and diet restrictions (for example a vegan women is at higher risk for iron deficiency). Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron, so it is generally recommended to consume iron-rich foods, or take an iron supplement with a source of vitamin C.
