Briefly explain the three types of self-barriers to listening

Three self-barriers discussed in the textbook are self-focus, emotional noise, and
criticism. Each involves attending more to personal concerns that to the speaker?s
content or emotions. First, self-focus, occurs when we think more about our own
agendas or issues than the speakers. We may plan the rest of our day, or worry about
whether or not we left our car windows rolled down. Second, emotional noise, refers to
our strong ?trigger? response to perhaps something that was said or done to which we
are sensitive. Our emotional reaction gets in the way of our cognitive ability to listen.
Third, criticism, is when we are distracted by the speaker?s appearance or mannerisms
at the expense of his/her content.
