What is an "I" statement? Provide an example of an "I" statement, then discuss why one should and/or should not use "I" statements

What will be an ideal response?

An "I" statement is a message that helps to reduce disconfirming messages involving negative generalizations. An "I" statement contains the following elements: 1. the other person's behavior, 2. your feelings about that behavior, and 3. the consequences the other's behavior has on you. Following is an example of an "I" statement: "When you criticize my appearance (behavior), I feel unloved (feeling), and I respond by withdrawing from you (consequence)."

"I" statements can be helpful to reduce disconfirming messages and create an open dialogue with less defensive communication. It also allows one to focus on feelings and behaviors rather than negative internal attributions of others. However, "I" statements are not effective in all situations. One should consider the person and context prior to using an "I" statement in order to be most effective.
