One of the pitfalls of eyewitness testimony is known as own-race bias. The finding that people better recognize faces of their own race than faces of other races is called own race bias

A second problem with eyewitness testimony is that police and juries generally assume the more confident an eyewitness is, the more accurate is the testimony. However, there is only a moderate association or correlation (+0.37) between how correct the identification of an eyewitness is and how much confidence the eyewitness feels about his or her identification.

A third problem is eyewitnesses may make errors if law enforcement officials ask misleading or biased questions or make suggestions about the perpetrator's identification. In these cases, eyewitnesses may unknowingly accept the misinformation as fact and give unreliable testimony
