Compare and contrast the personality theory developed by Carl Jung and the Big Five system of traits
What will be an ideal response?
Jung's theory is psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, whereas the Big Five is part of a trait or type theory. Jung believed that each of us has a personal and collective unconscious. The collective unconscious houses our archetypes (such as anima and animus), whereas the personal unconscious is analogous to Freud's id concept. Jung believed that personality is essentially a balance between opposing unconscious tendencies. Likewise, the Big Five says that we have a series of traits that are each bipolar. The student should name the five traits in the Big Five. These traits are believed to be relatively stable.
