Safety is one of the biggest issues with carriers coming under more scrutiny by the Federal Highway Administration and enforcing the rules as related to safety ratings.
Shortage of qualified drivers.
Drug and alcohol abuse, while appearing to under control, are still issues for both carrier management and employees.
Drivers' hours of service are undergoing intense review and are likely to be changed. Many trucking firm have built terminals and relay stations based on the current rules. Significant change could be very disruptive and cause dislocations in logistics practices but financial stability is also a major concern. The largest carriers and those serving niche markets appear to be in satisfactory condition but mid level and union carriers are under intense pressure from competitors and shippers. Funding for replacements and improvements could be difficult to obtain.
