In general good answers will note that about half of the people in the world are bilingual. Research on the benefit of bilingual education does not support the assumption that bilingualism has a large negative effect on language development. In fact, people who are bilingual tend to score higher than monolinguals on a variety of cognitive ability measures including attentional control, working memory, abstract reasoning, and some types of problem solving. Bilingualism may even procide some protection agains dementia in later life.
