A total of some 56 million or 18% of the U.S. population in 2015 shared an important part of their identity—that they claim ancestry from a Spanish-speaking country. However, estimates of the number of people in the United States who speak Spanish regardless of claims of ancestry is much less at 37 million or some 12% of the U.S. population.
