If containment does not work, then leaders will try to neutralize the threat. Incumbents who pursue a
neutralization strategy aggressively often succeed in short circuiting the moves of innovators or new entrants even
before they make them--or at least in forcing them to seek out the incumbent as a partner or acquirer. Microsoft, for
example, is so aggressive at adding free software features to its popular Windows platform that new software firms
routinely include partnership with Microsoft as part of their entry strategies. A more common neutralization tactic,
however, is the threat or use of legal action.
