List considerations for pediatric infusions and why they differ from adult infusions
What will be an ideal response?
Neonates and pediatric patients often require diluted infusions for two reasons. Pediatric patients require smaller doses, and dilutions are usually used when a dose is so small that it cannot measured accurately. The other reason for using dilutions is that neonatal and pediatric patients' organ systems are still developing. Their liver and kidneys do not metabolize and excrete medications as efficiently as those of most adults. Diluting the medication, or putting the dose in a larger fluid amount, is less taxing on the developing systems.
