How are sleep patterns related to the environment the newborn is raised in?

How long infants sleep and where they sleep seems to very culturally dependent. Infants who are breast-fed seem to feed around the clock. They typically sleep with their mothers because this makes it easier to feed them. Infants who are kept in their own room sleep for longer stretches at a time. Infants who are carried on their mother's back all day seem to sleep throughout the day in shorter naps and rarely sleep longer than 3 hours at a time.
