Explain the relationship between self-concept, culture, and communication
What will be an ideal response?
The development of self-concept and communication varies from culture to culture and is determined by cultural norms and behaviors. For example, cultural factors such as being individualist or
collectivistic influence the way self-concept develops, in that one values individual achievement and
the other values group cohesion and success. Communication is also influenced by the way selfconcepts are developed within a cultural context. Therefore, it is important that individuals understand
how culture can influence their self-concept and their ability to adopt communication techniques to
manage these differences.
