Discuss whether conducting primary research is preferable to using secondary research sources

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Secondary research can be quicker and easier, and less expensive. While it may take some time to narrow down and refine your search results, if the material is out there it is ultimately just a matter of finding it. Then you will need to assess it with the 3 "A"s — authorship, accuracy, and age — to see if it is usable for your report, and if so, in what capacity. Information about a technology issue must be very current to be used to guide a purchasing decision, for example, as it must take into account the latest advances in the field. Information that is a bit less current might still be useful to you for understanding the different components of a system and their limitations, etc. Primary research is a bigger undertaking. It requires more time and effort to conduct, and evaluate the raw data that results. But advantages are that you are assured of the accuracy, authorship, and age if you are doing it yourself. You can also focus the research to exactly your particular situation, instead of using something that is less specific to your own needs. In some cases you won't have the time or resources to conduct primary research, but in some case you will have no choice but to do it.
