In the jazz world, a piece of music given to band members is called a "chart." Given the structure of jazz compositions, why is this an appropriate term?

What will be an ideal response?

A chart implies the idea of a sketch, and a jazz chart gives musicians some basic guidelines for their performance as opposed to a strict note-by-note performance. A chart allows room for improvisation, and the "journey" of the performance will be somewhat different every time.
