Kamala plans to leave Nepal and study at a university in the United States. Explain how

Kamala could use the three strategies in the textbook to adapt to others who are different from
her in the United States.

What will be an ideal response?

First, Kamala could seek information. If she knows people from the United States, she
could observe interactions to learn values, norms, roles, and rules. If she does not know
anyone directly, perhaps she could contact a pen pal from the United States to
correspond with about the culture in the United States and on American college
campuses. She could also read books about American culture, surf the web to find
information about culture and the university, and take a course to polish her skills in
English.
Kamala could also listen and ask questions. Once she arrives in the United States, she
must be open to communicating with others. She must ask thoughtful questions that
will help her understand cultural norms and university life. Then, she must take time to
listen carefully to the responses given to reduce her uncertainty.
Kamala must also realize that all her questions will be not be answered immediately.
She must tolerate ambiguity. Although U.S. culture tends to be explicit, she will still
have to be patient.
Kamala must also be mindful and realize that everyone is not just like her. For
example, she notices that Americans are much more vocal in their interactions in than
students in Nepal. She realizes that while this behavior would be considered rude in
Nepal, this behavior is valued in the United States
Also, Kamala can become other-oriented by focusing on others rather than being
egocentric. She can develop deeper interpersonal relationships by socially decentering
and seeing how others view the world and empathizing with others.
