One dimension in which listening can vary culturally is whether a culture is individualistic or collectivistic. Identify some listening styles and poor listening behaviors you might expect to see in each kind of culture.

An individualistic culture may value listening less than a collectivistic culture. You might be more likely to see poor listening behaviors that emphasize the self with little regard for the conversational partner, such as talkaholism and gap filling. Action- and time-centered listening styles might also be more common because of their focus on the listener’s subjective experience of the conversation. In a collectivistic culture, you would likely see listening behaviors that focus on maintaining politeness. Pseudolistening might be a more common poor listening behavior, because the listener can maintain at least the appearance of attention. People-centered listening styles might be more common because of the attention paid to the conversational partner’s mood.
