Define, explain, and give an example of relationship talk.
What will be an ideal response?
- Relationship talk is conversation about the nature, quality, direction, or definition of a relationship.
- As relationships move toward greater intimacy, the amount of direct relationship talk increases as does the expectation for such talk. Unwillingness to engage in relationship talk in an intimate relationship can send a negative message that ultimately drives a partner away.
- Relationship talk appears to be viewed differently by men and women.
* Men tend to view talk as an instrumental way to fix problems.
* While women might share this view, they also see relationship talk as part of the routine for maintaining the relationship. For example, "I'm happy with how close we've become. How are you feeling about us?"
- Student examples will vary.
