Buddhism began in India and was carried by monks on the Silk Road, the great trading route. Texts were translated into Chinese and other translations followed. The appearance of Buddha figures throughout Southeast Asia are the best manifestation of the spread of the religion. Buddhism was compatible with Daoism in China where leaders absorbed the best of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Chan Buddhism also developed. In Tibet, the religion adapted to the native mystical religion known as Bon. Buddhism merged with Shintoism in Japan.
