A video journalist should avoid using a long shot if details are important, there is a primary speaker in the frame or the shot has too much wasted space. Medium shots should be avoided if the scene lacks value, subjects cannot be adequately framed, the shot fails to have the impact of other shot types or there are too many medium shots in a row. A close-up should be avoided if the viewer cannot tell what is happening in the frame, it does not follow in the sequence from long shot to medium shot to close-up or it jars the viewer.
