Space is a very important aspect of communication that is often overlooked or disregarded in the patient encounter. A patient's room usually becomes a temporary home, and it is necessary for you to respect that patient's territory and individual space. There are three basic categories of space:
1 ) Social space
2 ) Personal space
3 ) Intimate space
Understanding the boundaries and special characteristics of these spaces will enhance your ability to communicate with your patient.
