This model shows the layers of self-disclosure as relationships develop. Layer 1 is
impersonal communication (such as that on early dates). Layer 2 is more personal, revealing
attitudes and beliefs; at this time, people assess whether to continue building the relationship.
Layer 3 is more intimate and has more breadth and depth in revealing feelings and values. Layer
4 reveals peoples' inner essence, though some secrets may remain hidden.
