Economic insecurity, alienation and unhappiness are three psychological costs of development. The process of creative destruction, or the loss of jobs due to the creation of new technologies, has left many people with a constant sense of anxiety over their jobs. The natural harmonious relationships between people and nature, their jobs, and each other have been eroded as people become more alienated. Many people feel disconnected from the natural world as they spend more time in urban environments, they do not feel a sense of attachment to their often very impersonal jobs, and specialization has created a competitive atmosphere that pits people against each other. Finally, happiness has not necessarily come along with economic well-being. A good example is China where people continue to face issues like pollution, congestion, employment inequality, and income inequality.
