The three components of perception are selection, organization, and interpretation. Components don't usually occur in order and often occur simultaneously consciously or unconsciously. Selection is when an individual chooses which sensory information to pay attention to. There is so much information that we cannot pay attention to everything at once. Organization is how we use cognitive representation to categorize information and form models that help us know how to use the information. Interpretation occurs when we assign meaning to the information.
For example, on the first day of class a student named Mike, who is single, might notice an attractive student across the room smiling at him. Selection occurs when the Mike looks around the room to identify attractive students who might be his romantic interests. He uses his past experiences of what an attractive individual looks like to organize students in the class into categories of attractiveness. When the attractive student smiles at him, he interprets the smile as a positive invitation to talk to the student and initiate conversation.
