What is the difference between bitmap and vector graphics?

What will be an ideal response?

Digital images are called bitmap graphics because they are created with pixels-small squares of color that create the image, like tiles in a mosaic. This is in contrast to Illustrator's vector graphics, which are created with paths and fills. The key point to understand about vector graphics is that they are created based on mathematics; thus, they can be enlarged or reduced dramatically with no effect whatsoever on quality. This is not the case with bitmap graphics: whenever you scale pixels, it has an effect on the quality of the image. That effect is a negative effect, especially when you dramatically enlarge a bitmap graphic; the pixels start to show. Thus, whenever you incorporate bitmap graphics into your Illustrator artwork, it's a smart idea to do any manipulation to the image in Photoshop, then place it in Illustrator at the size you want to use it. Photoshop is much more adept at editing bitmap graphics.
