Prohibition was in effect 1920-1933 . Desire to eliminate alcohol dependence, crime, reaction against ethnic groups (Irish, Italian) associated with drinking; increased political power of women's groups acting as protectors of the family. Prohibition did decrease drinking and drinking-related health problems, but there was a large black market that fueled the growth of organized crime. Concerns about widespread disrespect for the law combined with a desire to lower the income tax by collecting alcohol taxes, leading to repeal.
