Why are habituation and instrumental conditioning paradigms considered assessments of
recognition memory?
What will be an ideal response?
In the standard habituation paradigm, the researcher first habituates the infant to a
novel stimulus. Next, the researcher may provide a new stimulus paired with the
original one. The infant's interest in the new stimulus is evidence that she recognizes
that she has seen the original stimulus. In the instrumental conditioning paradigm, the
infant is reinforced for exhibiting a behavior, such as moving a mobile that has a string
attached to the baby's foot. Some time later, this apparatus may be re -presented, and
the baby may engage in the same behavior. This behavior is taken as evidence that the
infant "recognizes" a familiar situation that had reinforcement value.
