Answer: Mildred Parten concluded that social development begins with nonsocial activity—unoccupied, onlooker behavior and solitary play. Then it shifts to parallel play, a limited form of social participation in which a child plays near other children with similar materials but does not try to influence their behavior. At the highest level are two forms of true social interaction. In associative play, children engage in separate activities but exchange toys and comment on one another's behavior. Finally, in cooperative play, a more advanced type of interaction, children orient toward a common goal, such as acting out a make-believe theme.
Longitudinal evidence indicates that these play forms emerge in the order Parten suggested but that later-appearing ones do no replace earlier ones in a developmental sequence. Rather, all types coexist in early childhood.
