Describe Piaget's Three Mountain Task and the typical results for children of various ages
What will be an ideal response?
Children are shown a three-dimensional mountain scene (made of clay). Children sit on one side of the mountain,
and a doll "sits" at another location. Children are asked to describe what the doll sees from its location. The child is
then shown some two-dimensional drawing and must choose which depicts their view and which depicts the
doll's view of the scene. Four-year-olds typically pick cards at random, whereas 5-year-olds have difficulty
differentiating between their view and the doll's view. Most six- and seven-year-olds realize the doll's view is
different, but cannot select the correct cards. Ten-year-olds typically are accurate.
