Written materials can deal with many aspects of a culture that individuals may not bring up during a discussion, but may also be biased or outdated. On the other hand, individual members of a culture may provide insight and personal experiences that researchers from outside that culture may not have, but they may also have their own biases, may belong to co-cultures that are not representative of other co-cultures within their overall culture, and are unique individuals who do not speak for the whole culture.
