How does the use of a Storage Area Network (SAN) differ from the use of a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device?

Storage Area Networks (SAN) are more expensive to implement than NAS, but because the data stores on a SAN are directly formatted and managed by the hypervisor, SAN can provide higher speed performance than NAS along with more advanced features such as clustering and dynamic storage allocation. SAN systems are based on either Fibre Channel or iSCSI, whereas NAS systems provide access via file sharing protocols such as NFS, AFP, or CIFS.
