Ethics and appropriate behavior transcend all international business activities and should figure prominently in management decisions about financial performance and competitive advantage. However, corruption and bribes are commonplace in many countries and legal in some. Bribery frequently takes the form of grease payments relatively small inducements intended to expedite decisions and transactions or otherwise gain favors.

Some firms engage in deceptive marketing practices to induce people to buy their products or offer defective or harmful products or packaging. For example, millions of electronic products, from cell phones to computers, are discarded every year, not because they are broken but because newer versions become available. Products that could be recycled instead end up in landfills. Theft of intellectual property represents another ethical violation, one especially common in international business.

Core corporate social responsibility values include avoiding human rights abuses, upholding the right to join or form labor unions, eliminating child and compulsory labor, avoiding workplace discrimination, protecting the natural environment, guarding against corruption, and the like.
