Cross-sectional study would compare separate groups of participants, for example, a group of 60-year-old adults, a group of 70-year-old adults, and a group of 80-year-old adults. Memory ability would be measured for all three groups and the scores would be compared. The corresponding longitudinal study would evaluate memory ability for one group of participants at three different times: first when they are 60 years old, again when they are 70 years old, and finally when they are 80 years old.
