You have asked Gray Lewis to contribute to the user manual for the new system. He suggested that you include a section of frequently asked questions (FAQs), which you also could include in the online documentation. Prepare 10 FAQs and answers for use in the printed user manual and context-sensitive Help screens.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Students should develop questions they believe that users would ask in a real situation. In this case, the specific answers are not as important as the presentation of a list of typical questions. An FAQ section usually begins with a numbered list of the questions, followed by a set of answers, similar to the following:

ANSWERS TO FAQS
• How do I start the system in the morning?
The system should be up and running from the day before. If it is not, simply turn on the main power switch on the server and allow the system sufficient time to power up the network. When you see the Personal Trainer Welcome screen, enter your password. As soon as the system recognizes you as an authorized user, you can power up the individual workstations.
• How do I shut down the system at the end of the day?
Select the Utilities option from the Main menu and choose the End of Day Procedures option. There is an emergency shutdown option that requires a special password. For more information on this feature, consult the office supervisor.
• How do I perform a daily backup?
The system backup is automatically performed as part of the End of Day Procedures, but sometime you may have to run special backups. Select the Utilities option from the Main menu and choose the daily backup option. Follow the on-screen instructions; a message will be displayed when the backup is complete.
• How do I obtain technical support?
Your first step is to review the Troubleshooting section of the Personal Trainers User’s Manual, which contains a list of common problems and suggested solutions. If that does not solve the problem, your next step is to contact the office supervisor who will arrange for additional support from the hardware or software vendor, if necessary.
• What should I do if there is a severe thunderstorm or intermittent loss of power?
Our system has a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) that can provide power to the system for approximately 1 hour after we lose electric power. During this time, you should perform a system backup and shut down the system. This procedure is covered on page 3.6 of your User’s Manual.
• How do I process a member’s payment?
Select Member Payment from the Main menu. Enter the information into the onscreen form and follow the prompts.
• How do I register a patient for a new activity?
Select new registration from the Main menu. Select the activity in the drop down box. Enter the information into the onscreen form and follow the prompts.
• How do I look up a member’s account?
Select the Find Member option on the Main menu. When prompted, enter a member number. If you do not know the member number, you can enter a last name and first name. The system will perform a “sounds like” search and display any matches or partial matches. When you recognize the correct member, confirm the member number. The member data screen then will appear.
• How do I change a member’s profile information?
Select the Update Profile option on the Maintain Records menu. You can change any item of member’s information. The information system stores member data by member number.
• What should I do if the laser printer does not print?
First, make sure that the printer is online and has a supply of paper. If the online indicator is not illuminated, press the Control button just under the indicator light. If the printer is out of paper, the LED indicator panel will display PAPER OUT. If you still have a problem, your next step is to review the checklist on page 3.0 of the User’s Manual.
