Why might you want to freeze rows or columns in a large dataset?

When you scroll to parts of a dataset not initially visible, some rows and columns disappear from view. Freezing rows and/or columns keeps the frozen rows and/or columns visible onscreen at all times when scrolling through a large dataset.
