Answer: Socioemotional selectivity theory posits that as people age, they become more selective about who they want to spend their time with, and consequently reduce the number of people in their social circle. This may be due in part to their perceiving that they have less time left to live, so they want to spend it with those who are most meaningful. However, it could also be that in earlier parts of the lifespan, relationships serve a wider range of functions, such as providing knowledge and information. For example, they may enjoy doing sports or hobbies with friends who provide an opportunity for learning and improving, whereas these goals become less relevant in later life.
