Should the government require a greater emphasis on preventative health care? Provide an argument for such a plan. Then provide an argument opponents of the plan might use. Examine the economic, political, and ethical/equity issues associated with the issue.
What will be an ideal response?
Students can discuss how preventative care tends to be cheaper than dealing with a medical condition after the fact. Politically, they could discuss the role of the tobacco industry if the government does more to prevent smoking or the food industry in the context of obesity. Ethical and equity issues could be addressed in terms of consumer choice or government intrusion into private decisions.
