Students should list the three reasons why CMC is important. Examples will vary. The four most common uses of the Internet have also been listed.

First, CMC is a pervasive form of communication. This means that most people use CMC constantly. For example, many students in college today have a portable laptop computer and a cell phone they carry at all times. People text while they walk; and in class, students use their laptops to chat, take notes, and surf the Web.

Next, CMC has been adopted more rapidly than any other communication technology. For example, our parents did not have cell phones when they were our age, and many grandparents today do not (nor do not want to) use computers.

Last, CMC impacts multiple daily activities. Most people use CMC for four reasons: 1) to exchange e-mails and instant messages, 2) to entertain themselves, 3) to make financial transactions, and 4) to seek and exchange information. Examples of each, respectively, include: 1) checking and sending e-mail to family, 2) playing fantasy sports online or playing games, 3) checking account balances and transferring money, and 4) doing research for a school project.
