Describe the role of the gay community in fast tracking HIV drugs.

What will be an ideal response?

The gay community put pressure on the Food and Drug Administration to fast-track drugs that might be beneficial for treating AIDS. Rather than accepting the usual lengthy process required before drugs are allowed to go on the market, interest groups exerted pressure to speed up approval for drugs that might help. Pointing out that individuals with AIDS were in imminent danger of death, activists argued that trying something new was better than just letting them die. This successful campaign opened the door for other extremely deadly diseases.
