He added a stage between young adulthood and middle adulthood: career consolidation. The term career is used broadly and can involve either paid employment or a vocation which does not provide income but still contributes to the household; e.g., stay-at-home parents. He also added a stage following middle adulthood called keeper of the meaning. This reflects Erikson's idea of generativity but in more specific terms of maintaining cultural and familial values, traditions and institutions; e.g., taking part in historical preservation societies, museums, or even continuing family traditions.
