In 1980, all presidential candidates raised about $162 million. Adjusted for inflation, the 2016 total is over three times the 1980 total. Even in the last decade and a half, the amount of money raised in presidential elections has increased sharply. In 2000, all presidential candidates raised about $578 million; adjusted for inflation, the 2016 figure is 1.8 times as much.
