What is the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and how does it work?

What will be an ideal response?

A part of the TCP/IP suite of protocols, the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is used for network management on TCP/IP-based networks. It provides administrators with a way of centrally managing workstations, servers, switches, and routers from a central computer running management software. SNMP provides network management services through agents and management systems. The SNMP management system (a computer running management software) sends and requests information from an SNMP agent. The SNMP agent (any computer or network device running SNMP agent software) responds to the management system's request for information. The management systems and agents can be grouped into communities for administrative and security purposes. Only those management systems and agents in the same community can communicate with each other.
