How is self-esteem traditionally assessed? How might our choice in assessment methods be
influenced by the age of the participant?

Self-esteem is the evaluative side of self-representations, or how good the person feels
about their self-descriptions. Self-esteem can be assessed in a global fashion, or across
different domains. Traditionally, the self-esteems of younger children have been
assessed with the assistance of drawings or pictures, and across fewer domains than
older children. The self-esteem of adolescents may represent a more complex
assessment because they participate in domains not frequented by younger children
(e.g., work; romantic relationships).
