The competition for the Baptistery doors focused on the originality of the artists. Individual achievement came to the fore front through this competition and continued in a similar fashion with the competition for completing the dome of the Florence Cathedral. The fact that artists were including self-portraits in their work (Ghiberti and Botticelli) speaks to the rise in individuality.
