Explain the state of mind a researcher should take when beginning an ethnographic study

What will be an ideal response?

The researcher's goal is to observe participants, not to correct their behavior. It is to appreciate how the setting is and to be empathetic to participant circumstances. Researchers do not have to agree with subject perceptions, but must feel empathy. Researchers will need to define themselves to participants in order to establish rapport, and subjects will likely look for clues as to how the researcher perceives them. The researcher must be able to be open and honest when establishing himself or herself as neither an advocate nor opponent, just an honestly curious observer. Even in critical ethnography, the researcher must be neutral to the scenario studied, even when wishing that research will help to improve the participants' circumstances.
