The spiral model combines the waterfall model with prototyping and iteration. Depending on the risks identified, you can combine the spiral model with other approaches and methods. For example, if performance is important to the goal of the iteration, then you can plan for benchmarking, or if the flow of the user interface is of concern, then you can employ some kind of prototyping, simulation, or storyboarding.
