Hispanic came into common use as a result of the 1980 census to identify various U.S. Spanish speakers’ shared roots to Spain. It refers to that population segment with the capability of speaking and comprehending the Spanish language, with ancestry based in a Spanish-speaking country, and that identify with Hispanic cultures. The Census Bureau considers it an ethnicity rather than a race, so in the U.S. census, someone of any race can be Hispanic. The term has been rejected by some because its use was imposed by the government as a way to identify Spanish-speaking people in the census. Chicano most often refers to that segment of the population born in the United States but with ancestors who came from Mexico. The label Chicano has a political meaning and is often used to represent a nationalist or separatist identity and a commitment to disassimilation.
