Answer: The four primary directions of Qi flow in the body according to TCM are ascending, descending, exiting, and entering. Normal physiological processes depend on coordination and balance between the Qi movements, also called "harmony of Qi activities." When things are out of balance, illness may develop. Different factors may cause an imbalance of Qi. These include poor nutrition, stress, inactivity or overexertion, and illness. Natural effects that are bad for Qi balance include wind, cold, dampness, and dryness.
