What should dental professionals do in terms of a total patient assessment for periodontal disease?

What will be an ideal response?

A screening should be conducted on patients for dietary risk before periodontal therapy. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans can be used as a model. Adequate intake of low-fat dairy foods, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains should be encouraged. Those at risk for deficiency should be encouraged to consume adequate protein, vitamin C, calcium, and vitamin D. A multivitamin supplement of 100% of the RDA may be recommended. If inadequate nutrient intake is suspected, the oral health professional should encourage the patient to consult a registered dietitian for individualized nutritional advice. Prior to surgery, he or she should offer diet suggestions for the first few days after surgery, including recommendations for soft and liquid foods in case of post-operative pain.
